The purpose of the class is to look at basic river rescue skills with an emphases on prevention. We will be using equipment a paddler normally carries with them (throw rope, carabiners, possibly pulleys) along with basic river knowledge (mostly common sense). Cost: $10 - includes handout. Saturday, April 9-10, 2005 [Training - Whitewater][Class II][Base Camp] Ozark Novice Whitewater. Whitewater equipment, clothing, some basic experience and instructor approval are required. Instructors will be on hand to teach eddy turns, surfing, rolls, etc. The Mulberry River near Ft. Smith AR is the most likely location for this training although the final decision will be based on water levels and weather. Novices should try to participate in both Ozark trips and then at least one of the Colorado novice trips. All whitewater paddlers are invited to join these trips and assist novices. CANCELLED Saturday, June 11-12, 2005 [Float Trip Flatwater][Class I][River Camp] Overnight on the KAW - Junction City-Manhattan. Pack your boat with camping gear. Tell stories around the campfire. Plan to camp on a sandbar Saturday night and finish the trip on Sunday morning. If you have not river camped before, help and advice are available. It is a gorgeous section! Meet Saturday afternoon, 3:00pm, in Manhattan at the east Hwy 24 Blue River bridge (take-out) with as many trailers as possible. Shuttle to JC and launch. Even with the high flows. the upper Kaw will have plenty of sand bar camping available. BYO............all appropriate gear, food, and water. Our club, officers, board members, trip leader and all participants are covered with liability insurance for water related activities. All applicable ACA trip requirements and guidelines apply. Participants must be on our
List of Insured Participants and register for the event in advance, or pay a $10 insurance fee and do paperwork at the put-in.

Saturday, September 17-18, 2005 [KCKA/ACA] [Meeting & Float Trip Flatwater][Class I][Base Camp] KCKA General Membership and Board Meeting & Float Trip at Toronto Reservoir & Wildlife Area. This years annual meeting will be held at Toronto Reservoir 18 miles east of Eureka, KS on US 54. Free camping has been offered for the nights of Friday, Sept 16, and 17. Gather knowledge that will help you select the proper paddle to fit you and your boat. Learn a forward stroke that won’t make your arms sore. Whether or not you exactly master this advanced stroke, you should be able to learn one or more techniques that can be used to improve your own forward stroke. Will divide into two groups for each float to accommodate whitewater and touring paddlers. 10 AM shuttle and a long float on Saturday. 7 AM shuttle and if possible a short float early Sunday. Saturday, October 22, 2005 [PRIVATE/PSA] [Public Service Announcement]
Arkansas River Clean Up. The plan is to clean up the Arkansas
River in downtown Wichita while the Lincoln Street Dam is lowered for
construction and then float to Garvey Park or Derby for a take-out. This will coincide
with World Water Monitoring Day. Local radio stations are promoting the event as a community wide opportunity to pick-up trash and debris along the river in conjunction with the “Don’t Trash Wichita” anti-litter initiative. The City Manager’s Office, Environmental Health Department, Public Works and the Park Department, as well as other city offices, are providing coordination and assistance to the various environmental and civic organizations expressing interest in participating in these events.

SIERRA CLUB invites you to join us for a joint meeting to discuss the potential Arkansas River Access Project with Ken McCloskey from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. This access has the potential and is proposed to stretch from Rice County to the Oklahoma border. Access is targeted to be constructed every 5 miles along this stretch with development around the metropolitan areas first. Come join us to share pizza and pop and an evening of preview for the Arkansas River Access Project.
