Why Learn Rescue Techniques?

Each KCKA member signs a liability release agreeing that they are responsible for their own safety but wouldn’t you feel terrible if you could not help someone when your help is needed? The basic premise for paddling with others is safety and to help each other. KCKA members are notorious for helping each other and any other boater who needs assistance.

If you have advanced your paddling skills beyond a beginner or novice level then it is time to learn boat rescue techniques so you can help others or yourself should the need arise. Acquiring CPR skills could be lifesaving. Watching someone die because you don’t know how to help would be devastating. It is very possible that no one in your paddle group has learned these skills. Regardless what you paddle you may need to assist someone who has capsized a kayak or a canoe, or administer first aid to save a life.

Cell phones are not a substitute for learning rescue techniques or CPR. Several critical minutes or even an hour or more could pass while an emergency service finds and travels to your remote paddling location.

Please support the rescue classes with your attendance and contact your local Red Cross to learn CPR. Please practice what you learn so you will be proficient when you are needed.
